What is GPT-4.5?

In the world of artificial intelligence, there is a constant race to present the next breakthrough models. GPT-4.5 is the latest child of OpenAI, whose existence was confirmed by Sam Altman in his Twitter post. The co-founder and CEO of OpenAI admitted that for the first time in GPT's history, he felt like he was talking to a "reasonable person" – and that he himself was amazed by the advice he received.

However, this does not mean that GPT-4.5 is flawless. It is a huge and expensive model to maintain – in practice, it requires powerful server infrastructure and countless graphics cards. This is precisely the issue that has been causing a stir around the premiere of the new model in recent days.

Where do these GPU problems come from?

In his post, Sam Altman mentioned that OpenAI is struggling with a shortage of access to top-class graphics cards. Interest in generative artificial intelligence is still growing, and the newly announced GPT-4.5 – due to its size and complexity – needs them extremely much. As a result, OpenAI is not yet able to fully launch services for all interested parties.

Altman promises, however, that in the coming weeks, the company will purchase tens of thousands of additional graphics cards, and then expand this number to hundreds of thousands. The ultimate goal is to stably provide GPT-4.5 in both the Plus and Pro plans, but for now, this is not possible due to limited resources.

“It's not a model for solving tests” – why GPT-4.5 doesn't chase benchmarks

Sam Altman emphasized that GPT-4.5 was not created to "crush" popular test sets or set new records in solving specialized logical tasks. The creators have chosen a completely different goal: to make the new model more "human" and offer a more natural interaction with the user.

This means that GPT-4.5 puts a lot of emphasis on empathy, suggestions, and advice, and less on flawlessly executing tests. The idea is for the model to be able to surprise us with creativity, understanding of context, and useful hints – even if it's not necessarily the best choice for advanced scientific or technical tasks.

What actually sets GPT-4.5 apart?

  • More "human" communication
GPT-4.5 is supposed to be even closer to humans in the way it responds to questions and reacts to various contexts. Sam Altman mentioned that the model can genuinely surprise him with wise observations.

  • Huge size and demand for computing power
To achieve such quality of communication, GPT-4.5 was trained on an even larger amount of data than previous models. This translates into an enormous demand for computing power, which is one of the reasons for the current delays in the wider availability of the service.

  • Fluency and linguistic freedom
In the first tests, one can get the impression that GPT-4.5 generates responses in a more natural way, with a greater sense of style and context than older GPT versions.

  • Departure from classic benchmarks
Instead of focusing on breaking records in tests, OpenAI decided to develop the model towards higher usability in everyday interaction, which may be key for a wide range of users.

Summary

GPT-4.5 represents a significant step in the evolution of language models. On the one hand, we are dealing with a huge and expensive project that requires advanced infrastructure. On the other hand, GPT-4.5 can offer a completely new quality in our daily interaction with artificial intelligence.

Sam Altman claims that he has never experienced such "magic" in working with AI before. Now, we just have to wait until OpenAI overcomes the GPU deficit and the new model becomes available to users on a larger scale. If we believe the enthusiastic reports, it's worth giving it a chance – if only to see how close AI can be to a conversation with a real, living person.
