Knowledge from the web. Sites with courses and training.

"Learn, learn, for knowledge is the key to power" – everyone probably knows this proverb. Nowadays, the times when you had to go to the library for knowledge are long gone; after all, we have the internet. Although you can still find interesting treasures in libraries that are not available online, the internet is a huge convenience. There is a lot of knowledge on the web, available in free, subscription-based, or paid versions for specific courses. Below are several proven sites offering various types of educational materials across different fields. The only investment you will need to make is your time. It is also worth considering what kind of knowledge you are looking for, so that the proverb quoted in the first sentence doesn't end with: "...and once you have many keys, you'll become the janitor...". The following list is not a ranking or a review; it is simply a collection of useful links. I leave the assessment of quality and value to you. Perhaps some of these places are already familiar to you, but you might find some that will enrich your list of favorite bookmarks. Either way, if you are looking for access to free knowledge, you can start your search below.

First up is edX. A platform offering both paid and free courses and training. The mission of edX is to increase universal access to education while maintaining high quality. There is a reason why I mentioned edX first. EDX is a provider offering high-quality courses from the best universities and institutions around the world. You can see the list of partners here

One of the more interesting courses available on this platform is "Introduction to Linux," and this topic is also somewhat related to this blog. The course is available for free. In the second, paid option for $99, we can receive a certificate confirming our skills.

Other interesting courses from this platform include:

  1. Introduction to DevOps
  2. Introduction to OpenStack
  3. Introduction to Cloud Infrastructure
  4. Robotics
  5. Analyzing and Visualizing Data with Excel
  6. Introduction to jQuery
  7. Introduction to HTML5

Second interesting project is Highbrow. Highbrow is a place offering knowledge in the form of courses on various topics. What's interesting is the way they are distributed. The authors want to teach you something new and valuable in the shortest possible time. That time is just 5 minutes a day. Yes! 5 minutes.

More interesting courses include:

  1. HTML and CSS Basics
  2. Pulitzer Prize-winning photos and their stories
  3. The secrets of body language
  4. Speak English fluently - study plan
  5. Creating stunning content on Facebook
  6. Small habits - big results
  7. Improve your photography skills
  8. The most important numbers in the world

Similar to the above, the third proposal is Curious. Here, too, the learning system takes place via email. We choose the topics we are interested in, determine how much time per day we can devote to learning, and that's it.

Now something for programmers or people who want to start learning programming. This solution will also be useful as a refresher for everyone who already codes. We are talking about codecademy.

A platform with programming lessons in various languages, and surely everyone will find something for themselves. The list of available courses can be found at:

Lessons in the form of tasks to solve provide a preview of what we are doing in the code. This is a great learning aid that allows for a better understanding of what a given piece of code does.

The next interesting project is Udemy. A platform for courses in many fields. You can start by checking out the free courses to see if this form of training is right for you, and it must be admitted that there is plenty to choose from. From time to time, there are also promotions where you can gain interesting knowledge for a small fee without leaving your home.

At Udemy, besides the offer regarding IT knowledge, i.e., programming, operating systems, etc., we will also find courses on a healthy lifestyle, sports, and yoga. Something interesting for everyone.

Time for something for creators of websites and web applications. A well-known and popular place where you can start your adventure or deepen your knowledge of web programming, namely: www.w3schools.com

On the list of places where you can gain knowledge, Coursera cannot be missing. A modern educational company offering massive open online courses taught by global universities and scientific institutes.

Created by Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller from Stanford University. In April 2014, Coursera had 7.1 million users taking advantage of 641 courses taught by 108 institutions.

Participation in courses offered by Coursera is free, while obtaining verified certificates informing about course completion and some other services are paid.

The site features courses taught by, among others, Duke University, University of California, Columbia University, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Stanford University, Yale University, and many others. Most courses are conducted in English, but courses in Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, and several others are also offered.

In this list, the service Alison.com will also find its place. Like its predecessors, it is a multi-thematic platform with courses on all topics. There is also a Polish version of the service, but it is limited to an introduction and information about the platform.

Interesting courses on the Alison platform are:
  1. Introduction to Programming with Python
  2. AJAX Basics (Sun Microsystems)
  3. Google product courses
  4. Fundamentals of Network Security
  5. Introduction to PHP & MySQL Programming
  6. Web Development
  7. JavaScript & jQuery

If you know of any services not mentioned and believe they should be included here, I encourage you to add links along with a short description in the comments. Happy learning ;-)
