For some time now, the news has been circulating that a popular Linux distribution, which is a clone of RedHat's RHEL, has been closed. However, the world does not like emptiness, and in place of the popular CentOS, a proposal by the team that creates CloudLinux may fit. Before the project was named Alma, it was known as Project LENIX. AlmaLinux is a 1:1 binary fork of RHEL 8. As a standalone, completely free operating system, AlmaLinux enjoys annual support from CloudLinux Inc. in the amount of $1 million. We will support future RHEL releases by updating AlmaLinux, and current development activities are led by community members. Alma means "soul" in many Latin languages, including Spanish and Italian. The word comes from the Latin word almus, which means "nourishing, kind". In Poland, the word alma is a feminine form of the Latin adjective almus and means "nourishing, feeding, nourishing, fertile", as well as "kind, nice, blessed, beneficial". In Poland, it is mainly known from the Latin dignified name of the university: Alma Mater - "nourishing mother (with knowledge), nourisher".
No technological community is as spiritual and passionate as the Linux community. It is a caring, collaborative, and nourishing community that has turned individual efforts into software that drives the world.
The creators assure that the new Linux distribution, which is to be released in the first quarter of 2021, allows CentOS users to easily switch to its replacement, which enjoys continuous support. Switching requires minimal effort: since AlmaLinux is a binary fork of RHEL, the basis of CentOS, switching from CentOS to AlmaLinux is extremely simple.
This is a response to the needs of the community that used CentOS. In December 2020, the community lost one of its most important resources. Red Hat announced that CentOS would no longer be released as a stable version, but would be replaced by the constantly updated CentOS Stream. CloudLinux quickly realized the enormous consequences of Red Hat's announcement, so they decided to replace CentOS with a 1:1 binary compatible version of RHEL, which is free and offered as open source.
The installer is deceptively similar to the one known for years from CentOS.
